2021 Acura MDX Review

2021 Acura MDX Orange Exterior

Since its inception in 2001, the sharp 3-row SUV has been a solid top seller for Acura. In fact, Acura has sold more than 50,000 MDXs a year, 14 of the last 19 years. In the last few years, despite its success, the Acura MDX started to lose its luster as the tidal wave of fancy new SUVs flooded the market. Because of this, Acura took action and focused on crafting an all-new 4th generation model, that’s refined and better than ever. If you’re interested in driving one yourself, contact Dick Hannah KIA. A friendly sales associate will gladly take you on a Acura MDX test drive.

What’s new

Available in February of 2021, the all-new 2022 Acura MDX has become the new flagship model. The new MDX shares its styling and technology with the recently revamped RDX and TLX models. This new model is a bit bigger than the previous generations which nicely offers more room for passengers and cargo. New standard features like, a rear-seat reminder, a 12.3-inch display with a touchpad controller, and a wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay are now included. Also new, is a new double-wishbone front suspension for improved stability and handling and a redesigned ultra-rigid chassis that provides a longer wheelbase and provides a more comfortable ride.

Under the hood, you will find a 290-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine same as the previous models with a new mated 10-speed automatic transmission instead of its previous nine. Front-wheel drive remains standard with all-wheel drive available as an option. The 2022 Acura MDX comes with a new double-wishbone front suspension which provides outstanding stability and keeps the MDX glued to the ground. Its larger and wider wheels are highly responsive and make handling easy when pushed to the limit. The redesigned ultra-rigid chassis also improves handling response and performance for a superior drive. Its longer wheelbase works in tandem to create a more comfortable ride by reducing vibration and ambient noise. On test drives and road tests, the 2021 Acura MDX accelerated gracefully.

The sporty Type S model comes standard with all-wheel drive that is powered with a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that provides 354 lb-ft of torque. The new MDX Type S also features SH-AWD with torque vectoring, Brembo front brakes, and an exclusive Sport+ driving mode. In test drives, the Acura MDX Type S performed well and presented great handling and quick acceleration.

Interior & Tech

The 2022 Acura MDX boasts a stunning all-new premium interior with stylish french-stitched leather covers on high-end trims, and open-pore wood couples with metal and piano-black accents for an added shine. The front seats provide upgraded comfort and can be equipped with special features such as 16-way power adjustability as well as massage. The first and second rows offer plentiful passenger space, but the third row could feel a little tight for most adults. Overall, the interior delivers some amazing upgrades for the 2022 models.

The dash layout is handsome. Its large digital instrument panel and prominent horizontal infotainment screen is luxurious and intuitive. The center console is filled with an array of buttons and switches which can seem a bit overwhelming, but Acura did a great job at keeping it from looking too busy. The 12.3-in HD Center Display is the widest screen ever to be featured in an Acura. The multi-view rear camera, music, and available navigation are displayed with brilliant clarity and are easily controlled via the True Touchpad Interface™. The 2022 MDX also has Apple CarPlay and Android integration.
